USB Charging & TUF

What is USB Charging?

What is USB charging?

Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a low-voltage alternative to using a traditional socket. Low-voltage is safe and efficient, so USB is perfect for charging smaller, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

A big advantage of USB is that it is universal. The same USB outlet is used globally, unlike sockets, which have different shapes, sizes and types from country to country. So USB charging is great when you’re traveling internationally, or selling furniture internationally.

Not all USB chargers are the same!

Unlike a traditional plug socket, the power output of a USB outlet depends on the quality and level of specification. USB outlets in a hotel guest room for example tend to be lower output and charge more slowly, while commercial-grade USB outlets in offices tend to be higher output and charge much quicker.

What can I charge with a USB outlet?

Smartphones and tablets are by far the most popular devices for taking advantage of USB charging. But USB charging is available for a wide variety of devices including laptops, digital cameras, dash cameras, satellite navigation systems, Kindles and other reading devices, portable Bluetooth speakers, Bluetooth headphones, wearable tech (GPS watches), fitness devices/wristbands and battery power banks

How to determine a USB charger’s output:

Output is measured in Watts (W). 5 Watts is written as 5W.

Volts (V) x Amps (A) = Watts (W)

Early generation USB outlets may provide just 5W, whereas higher-grade USB outlets can provide enough power for laptops such as 60W or more. This makes a big difference to the speed at which you can charge your devices.

USB-A vs. USB-C: What’s the difference?

Imagine still using Windows ’95 to design your furniture? That’s what it’s like to use a 5W USB-A outlet to charge your mobile device. USB-A has been around since the mid-90’s and was not designed to charge today’s powerful mobile devices like the latest smartphones and tablets.  That’s why USB-C was introduced in 2015. Specifically designed for use with powerful mobile devices, USB-C is much more powerful, more durable and much smaller than its predecessor.

USB-C works in the exact same way as USB-A. Using a USB-C cable (available as Lightning to USB-C for Apple and USB-C to USB-C for Android) simply plug into a USB-C outlet and begin charging at faster speeds.
